For KYC consumer applications, the occupation field takes a SOC (Standard Occupational Classification) code, for example 15-1252 for Software Developers. Both the 2010 and 2018 SOC classification versions are accepted. You can download Rain’s accepted list.

How validation works

  • The API validates occupation against Rain’s accepted list and returns a 400 for any other value.
  • The field also accepts the occupation’s title (for example, Software Developers) in place of the code, but titles in the accepted list are capped at 50 characters, so longer official SOC titles fail where the code succeeds. Send the code.
  • The field is optional: an application without it is accepted, but Rain recommends sending it.
